Molasses passes through three stages: A, B, and C, with the last being the most uncrystallised and unrecoverable. If ethanol is created using 'B' heavy molasses (7.25 percent cane with a TFS of 50%), about 21.75 litres and 95 kg of sugar are produced from each tonne of cane. The 'C' molasses makes up around 4.5 percent of the cane and has a TFS of 40 percent.
Ethanol is extracted from C-molasses after it is shipped to the distillery. TFS yields 60 litres of ethanol per 100 kg.
Mills can produce 115 kilogrammes of sugar (at 11.5 percent recovery) and 45 kilogrammes of molasses (18 kg TFS) from one tonne of cane, yielding 10.8 litres of ethanol.
